Jasper is an opaque, impure variety of silica in the form of chalcedony or microcrystalline chert. It forms near volcanic activity and the circulation of hot water is required for its formation. In this case, the surrounding limestone was cooked by the introduction of igneous material which flooded the stone with solutions that traveled through a network of fractures.
