Baltic and Mexican Amber is the fossilized resin of extinct trees that lived thousands of years ago. Copal amber has the look of amber but is made from a more recently produced tree resin, it is not fossilized.
When the specimen contains an insect, it was originally trapped as the resin flowed from the tree. It is from the most common amber producing area in the world: along the Baltic coasts of Russia and Poland.
