The fishtail name given to this form of selenite is inspired by its shape. It is often referred to as angel wing selenite.

Selenite is named after the Greek word for moon, contrary to popular belief, it contains no significant selenium. Selenite is a form of fibrous and crystallized gypsum. Other varieties include alabaster, satin spar, desert rose and gypsum flower, gypsum rock, ram horn and sand gypsum.
