This colourful copper ore is composed of copper iron sulfide in the form of chalcopyrite and bornite. The tarnishing process, which created the multiple colors, has been induced by treatment in acid. Peacock ore is found throughout North America. Its colors are related to the quantities of iron (red), copper (blue-green) and gold coloured pyrite and galena.
