These specimens of Knightia, a herring-like fish, are found in the Green River region of Wyoming. They flourished about 55 million years ago when this area had a subtropical climate. The fish perished when the inland seas they inhabited suddenly dried up due to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. The fish are naturally preserved in layered limestone.
