Lapis is a mixture of at least three minerals: lazurite, calcite & pyrite. Ground lapis was the secret of the blue in ultramarine, the pigment which painters used to paint the sea and the sky until the nineteenth century. It was said to impart ancient knowledge, and the wisdom to use it and to enhance oneÕ
Named after Larvik, Norway, where this rock is found, is also referred to as blue pearl granite. It is a variety of monzonite with large inclusions of feldspar. When polished, the feldspar creates the silver blue sheen, known as the schiller effect. It is usually dark greyish blue with steel coloured flashes. Used by some as a protective stone, it is said to be grounding with a strong connection to the earth and spirits of nature.
